What a fight. What a right.
Marriage equality is now legal across the United States!
How much this community fought for their rights. Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, transsexual, allies. We all wanted love to prevail and it did!
I am beyond thrilled for our country. However, sad it took us this long. Our country’s motto is based on of unity and acceptance, but we have nothd but separate. We had states fought against those who wanted to marry their partner because it was “not right” or “unnatural” . Hell, a pastor wanted to set himself on fire if gay marriage were to be legal.
But, somehow, the Supreme Court ruled otherwise, 5-4. A close poll, but according to Justice Anthony M. Kennedy swung that vote!
From the New York TImes article:
“The decision, the culmination of decades of litigation and activism, came against the backdrop of fast-moving changes in public opinion, with polls indicating that most Americans now approve of same-sex marriage.
Justice Kennedy said gay and lesbian couples had a fundamental right to marry.
‘No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family,” he wrote. “In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.'” (NY Times,JUNE 26, 2015)
For the Arts, we will be writing, painting, singing, expressing our joy! I for one will, since now I can sing and dance at my many friends weddings!
But remember, Hedwig from the popular musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, knew of this origin of love based on Plato’s Symposium, which is worth the read. Man and Woman, divided into three genders, which during Hedwig’s beautiful soulful story, describes her torment to feel both male and female.
Hopefully, Hedwig can finally be herself, and all that feel confused, scared, or threatened will know, that who they are is beautiful!
Sing on friends! Sing on allies! We are getting closer to happiness for all!
